Lt. Colonel Fox was a ranking member of the 88 Marines and one of the 72 Marines killed in action aboard the USS Arizona on 7 Dec 1941. On 4 October 1918, then Sergeant Danny Fox earned the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross(DSC) and the French Croix de Guerre (the highest French honor) while serving as an infantry Marine with the Fifth Marine Regiment.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Daniel R. Fox, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 17th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4, 1918. Sergeant Fox volunteered and carried an important message across a heavily shelled area, returning through a barrage to report the result of his mission. Later, after being wounded, he remained on duty for four hours, carrying messages across a field swept by machine-gun fire.
