Joseph Edward Schullery, Jr. was born on 5/28/1920 in Hazleton, PA to Joseph Edward Schullery & Susan Beckley. Never married. Died during World War 2. Last address: Army Air Base Unit, Air Transport Command, Tarawa Is. Died on 7/11/1945 (lost at sea). His name is on a memorial on Hawaii Island. Joe was a flight engineer on a B24 that was forced to put down in the ocean after a storm caused them to run out of fuel while returning to Tarawa from a reconnasaince mission over Guam. He had not been scheduled for that flight, but voluntarily subbed for a friend. There was one survivor but he was not quite in his right mind. He said he last saw Joe standing on the wing with his life preserver on. Joe did not know how to swim. Repeated efforts by the family to worm more information out of the U.S. government failed. The fellow who Joe had subbed for visited the family in Delano, and sent cards for many years.
