Ella was born in the original log cabin her parents built on their land and received her education in the rural schools of Post township, Allamakee county, Iowa. Ella's parents were John Laughlin and Jane Cuttle, who came to America in 1835 and settled in Allamakee county in 1848.

Ella inherited land from her father which adjoined land that George was given by his father. There they made their home. They were faithful members of the local United Brethren Church. Ella was known as a merry person who had no limits when it came to helping others. After her brother's wife died from tuberculosis, Ella would walk through the fields and forest between their farms to help him with his children although she had a large family of her own.

Ella died from aortic insufficiency.
