THE PARIS NEWS, Apr. 20, 2003: 'HONEY GROVE, Gordon S. Woods, 81, of Honey Grove died Friday, April 18, 2003, at Northeast Medical Center in Bonham. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the chapel of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Butler officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Red River County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. He was born March 19, 1922, in Red River County, a son of Carl Edward and Mabel Huggins Woods. He was a retired employee of the City of Dallas, and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 124th Cavalry Division, and later in the 163rd Infantry Division, serving in Germany. He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star, and was one of eight survivors from a group of over 100 troops who encountered combat while crossing the Rhine. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Edward Woods; three sisters, Doris Elizabeth Kenemore, Dorothy Kendrick, and Arlie Edna Peek; and a brother-in-law, Herbert R. Stanphill. He is survived by a brother, Clifton Woods and wife Betty, of Paris; a sister Maurine Stanphill, of Mount Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Named as pallbearers are Brian Peek, Steve Peek, Tommy Peek, Joe David Jones, Tracy Jones, Bubba Jones, Herbert Stanphill, Jackie Stanphill and Billy Dean Yandell.'
