Military Funeral
Five G.A.R. Veterans attended the funeral of their comrade, John Crook, last Friday. They were Dewey, Gilbert and Dowd of Neligh, and Barney and Rhine of Madison.
Spanish American veterans were: C.E. Larson, Geo. Sweet and Rost. The American Legion conducted the funeral services at the Cemetery and acted as escorts of the body. Taps were sounded and the customary salute given at the grave.
It was interesting to see the way in which the G.A.R. members conducted their part, paying their last respects to their departed comrade. Each of them seemed quite spry and all seemed happy to be able to be at these services.
Upon interview it was found that several of these men had been in the same regiment with Mr. Crook and had been on the famous "March to the Sea".
Relatives who came from a distance for the funeral of John Crook were: Robert Crook, brother, the only surviving member of the family, of Dodgeville, Wis., Henry Crook, nephew, Springview, Wis., C.G. Crook, son, San Pedro, Cal., Dr. Roy Crook, son, and family of Lincoln, Gene Crook, nephew, North Platte, John Holland, grandson, Fairfield, Nebr., Vernon Crook, grandson, Portsmouth, Nebr., Jack Crook, grandson, Columbus, Herbert Crook, nephew, and wife of Bassett, Nebr. Most of these people left the first part of the week for their homes.
