Mrs. Margaret Penberthy Dies after Four Months' Suffering
March 25, 1923
Mrs. Margaret Penberthy, aged 72 years, most of which were spent in Dodgeville, passed away Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Howard Rowe, where she had been staying since last fall, when her health failed.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M.E. church in Dodgeville, Rev. W.C.Tyrrell of Platteville officiating.
Margaret Ann Crook was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, August 12, 1850. She came with her parents to Wisconsin in 1855, settling on a farm eight miles north of Dodgeville. As a young woman she taught school until her marriage in 1875 to James Penberthy. They made their home on a farm near Adrian, Minnesota, where Mr. Penberthy died in 1881, leaving her with three small children. She remained on the farm three years, then moved with her children to Dodgeville, which has been her home ever since.
Since the death in 1919 of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Jackson, leaving seven children, the youngest a boy of only two, she helped in the care of these children.
Mrs. Penberthy leaves one son and one daughter: Ernest Penberthy and Mrs. Mary Rowe, both of Dodgeville; also eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is survived by two brothers and one sister; John Crook of Meadow Grove, Neb., and Robert and Mary Crook of Dodgeville.
