James Peter Bowman was 18 years of age when he enlisted in the Union Army of Cario, IL on Aug 11, 1863. He was in Co H of 58th Reg of IL Inf., commanded by Captain Collins. He transferred to the ambulance corps, 2nd div., Co A in March of 1865. He was honorably discharged Apr 1, 1866 Montgomery, AL. 5 feet 10 1/2 inches tall, fair complexion, dark hair, grey eyes. He married Cassander Elizabeth Jane Lewis Feb 28, 1872 Villisca, Montgomery, IA. They had 10 children: Joseph, Lily, Daisy, Minnie, Benjamin, James, Frank, Emma, Leslie, and Julia.

His parents were Joseph Levi Bowman and Elizabeth Reisinger.
