Motion Picture Screenwriter, Director. The son of Joseph Mankiewicz and nephew of Herman J. Mankiewicz, he attended Exeter Academy, and majored in Drama at Yale University. He launched his career in the entertainment industry, serving as production assistant for the film "The Comancheros" (1961), before writing his first movie script for the picture "The Sweet Ride" (1968). In 1970, wrote the book for the stage production of "Georgy," and during the decade contributed script adaptations to three installments of the 'James Bond' film series, "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), "Live and Let Die" (1973) and "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974). In addition, Mankiewicz rewrote the scripts for the film "Superman" (1977) and its sequel "Superman II" (1980). He made his directorial debut on the TV series "Hart to Hart" (1979), and directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the 1987 film "Dragnet."
