Thomas was a Union Soldier from 1862-1865. He was married to Emily Jane House on January 27, 1859 in Putman Co., Indiana at the bride's house by Esq. Leiton; Witness Robert Holaday & James Burnside. On January 23, 1883, he purchased the St. James Hotel, Carterville, Jasper Co., Missouri. The hotel was constructed in the Fall of 1882 and Spring of 1883. He and his wife were members of the M. E. ( United Methodist ) Church of Carterville, Jasper Co., Missouri from 1876 to 1893. He sold the hotel and moved, with his family, to Orchard on February 3, 1893.
