Frederick Niemann sailed from Germany on a 3-masted, square-rigged ship Herschel built in New York in 1833. He arrived New York on May 14, 1851 and made his way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He brought to Wisconsin his skills as a tailor. On June 19, 1861, at the age of 47, he is activated for federal service as a Private with the 3rd Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry.
Frederick had four sons, William (1848-1929), Adolph (1854-1936) and Louis (1856 -?). Both Adolph and Louis were born in Wisconsin.
