COLUMBIA — Former 28th Judicial District Judge Holmes Mouser, 45, was found dead about 3 p.m. Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Caldwell Parish Sheriff Floyd "Slim" Hodges.
The former judge was found by a hog hunter off La. 149 near the Copenhagen Community. When found he was sitting in his vehicle with a .22 caliber rifle between his legs. The sheriff said he was shot in the mouth.
Mouser was appointed as judge after the resignation of Judge Louis Sleeth in 1971. He served one year before being defeated by present Judge Edwin Hughes.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edwin House officiating.
Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery under direction of Riser and Son Funeral Home of Columbia.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Holmes Mouser of Columbia; two children, Matt and Martha Mouser of Monroe; and one brother, Edward Mouser, Oakdale.
Mr. Mouser was the son of the late Vinson Mouser, who also presided over 28th Judicial District for several years.
