Son Ray served in the Pacific during World War II as did his cousin Jack Walsh, whose mother was Lillian's sister Ida. Jack later told a story of visiting Ray on Tinian Island in the Pacific. Ray told him something was special about an airplane there because security was so tight. Later, they knew why. The plane was the Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, leading to the end of the war.
