Joseph Bradford George died at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon at his home in Gifford of hemorrhage of the stomach. He took ill at 5 o’clock Saturday evening and was conscious until death came. All the children were at his bedside. His death was a great shock to the family and a host of friends. Joseph George was born Sept. 1, 1838, east of Homer. He was a soldier in the Civil war, enlisting in the spring of 1861 in the 26th regiment of Illinois infantry, and served four years. He was a devoted Christian. He married Miss Sarah E. Stayton on February 28, 1867, and to this union eight children were born. Two boys died in infancy and the widow and six daughters, Mrs. Cora H. Fitzgerald, Sidney, Mrs. Mary S. Hedquist, Mrs. Margaret B. Smith, Mrs. Effie E. Lefever and Mrs. Anna D. Smith of Gifford and Miss Melvia Mae at home, survive. He also leaves one brother at Sidney. He called his wife to his bedside just before he died and said: “Don’t grieve; I am save and prepared to go.”
The funeral took place from the Methodist Episcopal church at Gifford on Tuesday at 10:30 o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. J. E. Martin of Gifford. Members of the G. A. R. post acted as pall hearers and burial was at Maplewood cemetery at Rantoul.
