In 1894 he entered the Chicago Homopathic Medical School and was graduated in May 1897; one of seven to graduate with honors out of a class of fifty seven.
After graduation, upon the strong urging of Governor Barnes, he moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma to open his office. It is interesting to note that Governor Barnes had lost his personal physician, a homopathic physician, and wrote his friend, Judge Parker, to ask if he knew of anyone he might interest in coming to Guthrie to open an office and also to care for him. Judge Parker spoke highly of Clarence and Governor Barnes' invitation was forthcoming. Clarence opened his office in Guthrie in mid-1897 in a brick building on the corner of Oklahoma and 1st Avenue.
On 31 Dec 1900 he was married to Mary Nicholas, daughter of Rev. Albert B. Nicholas and Olivia Ann Sturges. To this union was born a daughter, Mary Claire, 3 May 1902. Tragically, on 8 May 1902 Mary Nicholas Petty died. She and her parents are buried in Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, Oklahoma. Clarence dedicated a window to Mary's memory in Trinity Episcopal Church in Guthrie.
On 28 Sep 1907 in Huron, Ohio, Clarence was married to Florence Sturges, (a cousin to Mary Nicholas).
To Clarence and Florence were born: James Sturges, 20 Aug l909, Marjorie, 11 Nov 1911 and Helen, 21 Feb 1914.
Clarence was active in early day civic affairs, serving on the Carnegie Library and Logan County High School Boards, and Parks Commission as well as on the city's health and medical committees.
In about 1918 Clarence's mother, Ada, came to live with the family here and remained until her death in 1926.
He retired from the practice of medicine in 1950 and was always busy reading and writing of his thoughts and philosophy, a practice he started as a young man -- writing some each day. (These writings of C S Petty are in the possession of his grandson, Lawrence Sibley Johnson.) He died 25 Sep 1955 and his wife Florence died five years later. The Pettys, Nicholas and Allans are buried on the Petty lot in Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, Oklahoma.
