Gertrude Isabel Atkinson (94) died at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, VA, on February 16, 2009.

She was the oldest of eight children born to Robert William and Estella Breig Atkinson of Berkeley Springs, WV. She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Flying Tiger pilot Capt. Peter William Atkinson, WWII Army Air Corps pilot, Capt. Robert Edward Atkinson, WWII Navy Pilot, Capt. Alphonsus Joseph Atkinson and Korean War Cpl. Anthony Francis Atkinson (who was also a Guidance Counselor at Martinsburg High School) and two sisters, WWII Army Lt. Theresa M. Atkinson Moore, RN. and Ruth Marie Atkinson (who died of diphtheria at age 9). Her surviving sister is Mary Atkinson Hughes and husband, Thomas, of Winchester, VA.

She is the god-mother of Deacon T. Vincent Neely, of Mesa, AZ, Edward Myers, of Tom's River, NJ, Robert Edward Atkinson, of Anchorage, AK, Robert J. Moore, of San Luis Obispo, CA, Tyrus Raymond Mullis, of Winchester, VA, Erich William Atkinson, of Baker,WV, and Dr. David Tribby, of Augusta, GA.

Gertrude was an excellent homemaker. She made quilts for her family and many dresses, hats, coats and decorative pillows, bureau scarves, etc. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas, The Legion of Mary and the Tuscarora Homemaker's Club. She did seasonal work at Musselman's Apple Factory and the Diana Shop in Martinsburg. She was blessed with excellent health and a joyous zeal for hard work. She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens.

She kept the holy Sabbath day at St. Joseph's Church in Martinsburg where her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2009. Interment prayers will be said at Rosedale Cemetery.
