Albany and Corning, NY and in 1832 rem. to Dexter, MI and thence to Williamstown. He owned at various times a flour mill, sawmill, woolen mill, and tannery. Rufus was the son of Peleg Gorton and Dorcas Wood.
There are numerous children by Rufus's first marriage but they seemed to have stayed in NY. There is one child between Louisa and Rufus, G. Lafayette Gorton. There are TONS of Gortons in the Dexter, MI, area when they moved.
