William James
William James was born in Karey (sic) county, Ireland, November 25, 1841, and died at Woodburn, Iowa, May 12, 1922, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 17 days. He was married to Johanna Butler August 13, 1865. They resided in Ireland for three years, after which they came to America and lived in Pennsylvania, later moving to Illinois, and then to Clarke county, Iowa. To this union were born eight children. Katie died in Infancy, Bridget died when 18 years of age and William died in 1919. Those he leaves to mourn his departure are his loving and true wife, three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Cronin, Mrs. Smith Danner and Mrs. Mike Viertz; also two sons, Tom and Johnie James; also one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Duggan; also thirty-two grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

His father, Edward James, died leaving him when he was only seven years old, also one brother, Tom, and a sister, Kate. He worked and made a living for his mother, sister and brother until be was married. He was a kind and loving husband and father and by his wife and children held in memory dear.

He was very kind and patient during his long illness, and after six weeks of suffering from heart trouble and dropsy he passed away.

They lived east of Woodburn on a farm until eight years ago when they retired and moved to Woodburn where he made his home until his death.

Mr. James was a man among men, much admired by his associates who were many and friends to no end. He was of that cheerful nature, a pleasant greeting and was a true Christian. The Catholic church and its blessings were his greatest pleasure and thought, being always present at Mass, whenever Mass was said at his church. The weather was never too cold or stormy for him to attend. But now he has been called away from us to receive his reward for his faithfulness in this world.

High Mass was held at the Catholic church in Woodburn on Monday at 10 o'clock a. m. conducted by Rev. Father O'Sullivan of Chariton.
