Sgt. Jerry D. Rice, 75, of Roanoke, Va, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. He was born on October 24, 1934, to John and Alice Rice. As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and bravely served his country, becoming a highly decorated Korean War veteran. After fulfilling his duty to his country, Jerry returned to serve the Roanoke Valley. A Roanoke City Police Officer for 32 years, Sgt. Rice is remembered and admired by many who graduated from the police academy under his watch. Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. One of his greatest loves are his six grandchildren. A thoughtful and intelligent man, Jerry had many interests. He enjoyed gun collecting, studying military history, and reading. Jerry was an avid fan of Jefferson Forest and VMI football. He also wrote poetry and his insightful letters to the editor were often published. Always ready with a joke and a smile, he had a unique sense of humor. He truly loved God, family and country, embodying the Marine Corps motto: Semper Fi. Jerry will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Surviving are his devoted wife of 49 years, Etta; children and their spouses, Don and Leanne Rice, Mary Etta and David Way, and John and Chrisi Rice; grandchildren Trey, Hunter, Emma, Jacob, Dempsey and Abigail; sisters, Pat Schluter and Doris Pugh; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Dempsey Rice; and one sister, Juanita "Spunky" Nowell. A Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Greg Moser officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park with Military Honors.
