KESSLER Clara, born in Greensburg, Ky. Oct. 7, 1900. She moved to Bridgeport, Okla. Territory in 1906 and to Edmond in 1918. An accomplished musician at an early age, she became the church pianist at 10 and played for every service and program. Her solid educational background began in Bridgeport and continued at Central State Normal School. She earned her Masters degree from Columbia University. Miss Kessler taught in Gracemont and Duncan before returning to Edmond, where she taught English for many years. She was the head of the English Dept. and in charge of the International Student Program at Eastern Washington State College in Cheney, Wa. until her retirement in 1969. One of her most memorable experiences was teaching English in Kobe, Japan, as a Fullbright Exchange Teacher in 1950. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Cambridge Club, Edmond Hospital Auxiliary, Kappa Kappa Iota, Sorosis Club, and the First Baptist Church. Miss Kessler was an avid supporter of the Edmond High School Alumni Assn. and the Central State University Alumni Assn. The CSU Homecoming was very special to her, and she loved seeing former students, classmates and fellow teachers.

Professor Kessler's life was her students. The impact of this one woman on people world wide will long be remembered. Former students still repeat such things as "is is a verb...verb, verb, verb!" and "when in doubt, leave it out!" Her influence with international students is attested to by the continuous stream of cards, letters, calls and visits from former students all over the world. Survivors include 2 sisters, May Kivlehan and Wanda Morrison of OKC; and a brother, John Kessler of Edmond. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clara Kessler Memorial Scholarship, c/o Central State University Foundation. Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Edmond, at 3pm, on Tuesday. Following the service, the family will be in the Fellowship Hall.
