Erna was born in Real County, Texas, the first born of the late Elic and Celie Laird, and was raised in a Scottish heritage family of sheep and goat ranches, in Leakey. She attended Leakey High School, graduated from San Marcus Academy, and attended Mary Harden Baylor College. In 1933, she married Rev. John Riley Hillman, a widower with five children and pastor of Leakey Baptist Church. She and Rev. Hillman had three children. In 1937, the family moved to Galveston, Texas, to form the Tabernacle Baptist Church on 53rd and R, renamed Moody Baptist Church and currently Central Baptist Church. Erna, after a career at Plantowsky's Furniture Store, was named manager of the Letitia Rosenberg Home for Women. She was the last manager of that facility as it merged into the Moody House. She then became manager of Galveston Orphan's Home on 21st Street, until returning to Leakey to care for her mother. She helped form the Leakey Baptist Church Daycare Center. She lived in Leakey until 2002, when she moved to Waco, where she resided in the St. Catherine's Home until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Hillman, in 1967.
She is survived by her daughters, Angie Catherine Hillman Tindell, of Waco, and Jeannette Hillman Thompson, of Leakey; son, Luther "Lou" Hillman, of Southlake; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; as well as the many lives she touched.
