Ernst was reported to have been born in Orlamünde, a town in the Saale-Holzland-Kreis district, Thüringen, Germany, in what was then Sachsen-Altenburg; however, he was baptised in Dienstadt, Eichenburg u. Kahle, Thüringen.

At 15 yrs. old, Ernst emigrated from Hamburg, Germany, to the US, on August 8, 1852, with his parents Ernst, 49, and Sophie, 34, and siblings Hermann, 13, Horace Otto, 12, Minna, 8, Duska 8, Carl, 6, Hugo, 4, and Hans, 2. They arrived aboard the ship "Irma," manifest number 7102, where they had been in steerage.

During the Civil War, he enlisted in the infantry, at 30 years old, on 9/28/1864 at Granger, Houston County, MN as a Private. On 9/28/1864 he was drafted into "G" Co. MN 2nd Infantry and was discharged on 6/10/1865.

Ernst married Sophia Maria Elisabeth Bastian on July 26, 1857, in Kane County, Illinois. They later homesteaded in Fillmore County, Minnesota, and then farmed in Thurston County, Washington. They had a total of ten children, four of which died young. Sophia and Ernst were divorced in 1892 and Ernst sold the farm and they each lived in their own home in Steilacoom, Pierce County, Washington, until Sophia died and Ernst moved into the Old Soldiers' Home where he died.
