The son of gold miner Richard Blackstock [1805-1858] and Hannah C. Underwood [1807-1891], John Henry was born in Georgia. He would marry Millie Elizabeth Blackstock [1846-1928] in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia on December 29, 1867. They were unrelated and met after the Civil War according to their daughter Della Blackstock Andrews.
