William is my 2nd Gr-Grandfather.

The youngest of seven children born to Hermann G Schneider [Herman Snider] of Germany & his wife Elizabeth Bowman of Somerset Co PA, both later of Spencer Co KY, William married Jane "Jennie" Evans on 11 Sep 1820 in Bardstown, Nelson Co KY, daughter of David Evans of Mercer Co KY. A petition for divorce was filed 28 Aug 1835. By Feb 1837, the divorce was final.

Children with Jennie:
1) Harmon Snider (1821-aft 1854), m: Sarah "Sally" Long.
2) Eliza "Lizzy" Jane Snider (1823-1906), m: Jacob Baughman.
3) George Washington Snider (b. 1825), m1: Louisa Parker, m2: Miss Elizabeth (nee unkn).

About 1830, William and Elizabeth Brummett began a life together, most likely never marrying as no record has been located. The daughter of George Gancer & Mary (French) Brummett of Brown Co IN, my 2nd Gr-Grandparents had the following children.

1) John Snider (1831-1906), m1: Elizabeth Murphy.
2) James Snider (1834-1861), m: Elizabeth Brummett (a distant cousin of his mother).
3) George Snider (1836-1908), m: Nancy Baker.
4) William Snider Jr (1839-1913), m1: Sarah Brummett, m2: Ellen Cornett.
5) Robert Snider (1844-bef 1856) (twin).
6) Martha Ellen Snider (1844-1875) (twin), m: George Abb Brummett, her 1C.
7) Joshua Snider (1847-1873), never married.
8) Jacob Snider (1849-1928), m: Bethany Jane "Jennie" Taggart.
9) Sarah Jane Snider (1853-1936), m: James Weddle Kennedy (my paternal Gr-Grandparents).
10) Rachel Snider (1856-1920), m: Robert T Knauber.

From records, it appears William had 2 sons named George. The first by Jane, referred to as George Wash. According to his letter to brother Jacob, he moved to Oregon. The second George was by William's second wife Elizabeth. The second George married Nancy Baker and passed his days in Brown Co IN.

According to "History of Spencer Co" [KY], William's mother, Elizabeth Bowman, was a daughter of one of George Washington's men. She was disowned for marrying a Hessian Soldier. This information has not yet been proven to my satisfaction and is only mentioned here as an item of interest.

"It Happened in Indiana: Remarkable Events That Shaped History", by J S Finch, Pg 35:
"...William Snider was one of the earliest settlers in what became the county seat of Nashville. He arrived in 1824 from Kentucky, cleared some land, and built a log cabin.

" He and wife Jane Evans, had separated before he left Kentucky. Snider, known as "Kentucky Bill", decided his daughter Eliza, born in 1823, should join him in Indiana. In 1828, history records Kentucky Bill made a trip back to Kentucky and kidnapped his child. He made the entire round-trip by horseback. On the return trip, five-year-old Eliza sat on a pillow in front of her father's saddle. Snider held her with one hand and guided the horse with the other hand."

Daughter Eliza Jane, by 1875 Mrs. Baughman, made a statement in court denying any legitimacy of William's children with Elizabeth Brummett and their claims to his estate. She would have been about 7 years old when her father met Elizabeth. At that time, she may have been returned to her mother. For whatever reason, she was certainly adamant about not recognizing her kinship to her half-siblings.

Much appreciation to Diana for the tombstone photo which assured accuracy of William's vital dates. Many thanks to Deeann for sharing Eliza's court statement.
