Cornelius enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 1 September 1863 at Centre Point, Tennessee. He was mustered as a Private in Company H, 21st (Wilson's) Tennessee Calvary. He was captured on 26 November 1864 and sent to the Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky. On 2 January 1865, Cornelius was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio where he arrived on 4 January 1865. He died at the Prison Camp on 27 February 1865 of pneumonia and was buried in grave #1461. Never to see his family again. His compiled military service record spelled his last name as VANDYKE but there was one variation noted with the spelling of VANDIKE.

Cornelius was the son of Isaac W Vandyke (1808–1868) and Eliza Bell Brown (1808–1891). He was listed living with his parents on the 1850 census, age 6, and the 1860 census, age 15. Both census records showed the spelling of last name as VANDIKE. No record of a marriage or children have been found. He would have been 19 years old when he enlisted in 1863.
