Killed in Rhea Field as part of the assault on Sherman and Peabody's brigades which were supported by Waterhouse's Battery. The 13th Tennessee Infantry Regiment were the right flank of Russell's brigade and were hit on their right flank by Peabody's brigade on the east side of Rhea Field. Their regiment drifted away from the brigade and ended up in support of Ruggles' Batteries in Duncan Field by noon. They rejoined Russell after Prentiss surrendered and formed the extreme left flank of the last line on April 6. Family legends state that Angus Vandyke was separated from his brother during the battle but found him in a field hospital that night. The next day Russell's Brigade formed the front and center of the C.S. defense as Buell's reinforcements and Grant drove the Confederates from the field. April 7 1862. Russell's Brigade suffered high casualties, 11th Louisiana, 22nd Tennessee, 12th Tennessee and 13th Tennessee. The 11th and 22nd lost near 50% and would never appear on a field of battle as units again. The majority of their losses were in their assault in Rhea Field on April 6 1862. Isaac enlisted with his brother Angus Marshall Vandyke in the Confederate States Army on 30 May 1861 in Jackson, Tennessee. He was mustered as a Private in Company I, 13th Tennessee Infantry. His brother was mustered in the same company. Isaac was killed during the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862 and was buried in the mass burial trench on the south end of Rhea Field His compiled military service record spelled his last name as VANDYKE but there was one variation noted with the spelling of VANDIKE.

Isaac was the son of Isaac W Vandyke (1808–1868) and Eliza Bell Brown (1808–1891). He was listed living with his parents on the 1850 census, age 8, and the 1860 census, age 17. Both census records showed the spelling of last name as VANDIKE. No record of a marriage or children have been found. He would have been 19 years old when he enlisted in 1861.
