HELEN MINTO
Helen Mattice Minto was the youngest of six children born to Elizabeth and Albert Mattice in Austin, Minnesota. Her father, an engineer on the Milwaukee railroad, died when Helen was only 11 years old. The railroad played a big part in the Mattice family. Three of Helen's brothers were railroad men, and her older sister married a conductor! Many of Helen's early memories are associated with trips she made with her mother to the Twin cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) and to visit her sister in Missoula, Montana.
Helen married Lewis A. Minto in 1917, before he went to France in World War I. She worked as a telephone operator and supervisor during that time. After Lewis returned from France, they moved to Missoula, Montana where Lewis worked in the machine shop and welding business. Two children, Robert and Joyce, were soon added to the Minto family. Lewis recently passed away at the age of 90, after 68 years of marriage. Subsequently, Helen moved to Seattle in 1986 to make her home with her son and his family.
In the past, Helen enjoyed doing handwork, crocheting, embroidery, knitting, and tatting. She also liked to bake. She laughs about having canned "everything that grew." Now she finds great joy in her two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Helen has gained many friends here at the Meadow brook while recuperating from a broken ankle. She also enjoys participating in many of the activities. Her son recently stated,: When mom recovers, I'm not sure if she'll want to return home or stay here instead!".
