Walter secondly married Mattie Emaline "Emma" Burks, widow of Claudie Wootson Seay who passed away in 1956.

He was survived by his wife, Emma Burks Abernathy; sons Walter Abernathy, Jr. (Bixby, Tulsa Co, OK) and James Alan Abernathy (South Pacific); daughter Betty Lynn Abernathy Simmons (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co, OK); stepdaughter June Seay Williams (Tulsa, Tulsa Co, OK); stepsons Clifford Lenard Seay, (Goshen, Pike Co, IN) and Lenuel Earl Seay (California); a number of brothers and sisters; and numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Services were 2 p.m. Thursday January 25 at Rose Hill Chapel.
