Wiley Hopkins Beene (also spelled "Bean") was the third child of Wiley Jackson Beene and Julia Ann Crew Beene. Wiley's great-grandparents migrated from Scotland between 1766 and 1769. Over the years the generations moved from South Carolina to Georgia where Wiley was born. When Wiley was very young his parents moved to Alabama, where Wiley eventually met Julia Ann Gantt. They were married in Coosa County, Alabama, in 1853. The couple had ten children (some sources say twelve children). In the early 1870s the family moved from Alabama to Itawamba County, Mississippi, where they farmed.

After Julia's death in 1880, Wiley married Charlotte Grimes, who died in 1885. He then married Mary Roena Wood. Wiley and Mary had eight children, five of whom lived to adulthood. When all was said and done, Wiley had fathered children over a 44-year time period, and had at least 85 known grandchildren. Three different spellings of the name "Bean" were used by the descendants. Most of Julia's children spelled the name "Beene," with one child using the spelling of "Beane." Mary's children spelled their last name as "Bean."
