Military Record: Enlisted May 13, 1898, mustered in May 14, 1898 at Austin, Texas. Honorably discharged November 14, 1898 at Richmond, Texas, as a Private, Company B, 1st Texas Cavalry. Enlisted again, August 15, 1899 at Houston, Texas and was honorably discharged April 17, 1901 at The Presidio of San Francisco, California, as a Corporal, Company D, 33rd United States Volunteer Infantry. He was born in Washington County, Texas, was 28 years of age at the time of enlistment. His residence was Richmond, Texas and his next-of-kin was Mrs. Mable Ransom.

He was a Captain of Texas Rangers at time of his death (murdered - shot in the back). He was Captain of Company D. A picture of him as Capt. H.L. Ransom in 1917 is in the book Texas Rangers Sesquicentennial, by Ann(?), pg.36.
The shooting as it was told me as a child: he was upstairs in his room in a hotel when a fight was staged outside his room (or downstairs?). He intervened and when he returned to his room, he laid down on his bed. Unbeknownst to him, one (or two?) men had sneaked into his room, crawled under the bed, and shot through the bed, killing him. As I recall, the death certificate states a gunshot wound to the neck as cause of death. Family tradition says a near riot erupted in Hempstead during his funeral - I suppose that was because he was so well thought of?
