Dr. Pope was born in Newsoms. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech and had received his degree in veterinary medicine from Auburn University. He was a member and elder of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Ruth Masonic Lodge 89 and Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Adkins Pope; a daughter, Mrs. Don C. Gibson of Isle of Palms, S.C.; two sons, Benjamin A. Pope III of Norfolk and Dr. Robert A. Pope of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Louise P. Hoggard of Norfolk and Sarah P. Dix and Edith P. Howitz, both of White Stone; three brothers, William M. Pope and Dr. Eugene J. Pope, both of Norfolk, and Amos H. Pope of College Park, Md.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John Monroe and the Rev. O. Morton Harris. Burial will be private. Friends may join the family from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the church's Samaritan Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
