Retired Contractor, 86, Dies Late Wednesday


Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at the First Mennonite Church for Robert U. Liechty, 86, 655 High Street, Berne, who died at 11:30 pm Wednesday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital following a long illness.


Rev. Gordon Neuenschwander, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be in the MRE Cemetery.


Mr. Liechty has been hospitalized for six months and in failing health for several years.


He was a resident of this community most of his life and was born near Berne December 20, 1885, a son of Emanuel and Anna Sprunger Liechty. He was married to Emma R. Sprunger November 27, 1913 at Dalton, Ohio, where they resided for some time. She preceded in death July 29, 1959.


Mr. Liechty was a retired contractor, builder and carpenter, following this trade for many years. He began his life's work at the age of 21 with his brother, Menas and the partnership continued six years. They also owned a threshing and clover hulling outfit. Later he was employed with the Indiana Construction Company in Fort Wayne for many years. While employed with this firm he suffered severe injuries in a fall into a box car, but though he spent 55 days in the hospital, he recovered almost completely.


Mr. Liechty built the pavilion at Lehman Park here as well as other landmarks in the area.


Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Anna Myers, R.R. 2, Berne; Mrs. Adrian (berneta) Lehman and Mrs. Harry (Colleen) Smith, Berne and Mrs. Ralph (Corena) Liechty, Wooster, Ohio; four sons, Melvin E. Liechty, R. R. 1, Berne; E. Gordon Liechty and Loren Liechty, both of Berne and Rev. Robert Liechty, Zion, Illinois; 33 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, David O. Liechty, Berne, Reuben Liechty of Montpelier and a sister, Mrs. Rufina Sprunger, Swiss Village, Berne. Mr. Liechty supported three Korean girls for many years. Two sons, James E. Liechty, who died in 1968 and Sammy in infancy, a sister, Mrs. Alfred (Robertine) Sprunger and three brothers, Calvin, Menas and Menno Liechty preceded in death.
