Rites Today for James E. Liechty
Funeral services were held at 2 pm today at the First Mennonite Church for James E. Liechty, 46, of this city, who died unexpectedly at 12:30 pm Friday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital. Rev. Gordon Neuenschwander, pastor of the church, officiated and burial was in the MRE Cemetery. The Winteregg-Linn Funeral Home of Decatur had charge of the service.
Mr. Liechty, a nationally known auctioneer, died after an illness of only a few hours. He complained of not feeling good Thursday night and he was sent to the hospital Friday morning for observation. He was found dead in his hospital bed by a nurse. He had appeared in satisfactory condition just a few minutes earlier. Death is attributed to a heart attack.
Mr. Liechty was a graduate of the Reppert School of Auctioneering in Decatur where he was a part time instructor. He conducted a wholesale automobile auction weekly at Grand Rapids and Flint, Michigan. He was a member of the Indiana Auctioneers Association of which he was a past president and a member of the National Auctioneers Association. He was a member of the Berne Area Development Committee as well as being secretary treasurer of this group which was responsible for bring considerable new industry to Berne. Mr. Liechty also was a home builder and constructed several of the fine homes in Berne. He was owner and manager of Mobile Manor, a mobile-home or trailer court here. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church where he was a past master usher.
Mr. Liechty was a lifelong resident of Berne. He was born March 4, 1921, a son of Robert U. and Emma Sprunger Liechty. He was a graduate of Berne High School and on January 9, 1942, was married to Carol Wulliman at the First Mennonite Church with Rev. C. H. Suckau officiating.
Surviving are the wife; four sons, Ryan, who is stationed on the U.S.S. Okinawa with the U.S. Navy; John, a student at Huntington College; Joe, a student at Bluffton (Ohio) College and Randy, at home; the father, Robert U. Liechty of Berne; four brothers, Melvin E., Gordon and Loren Liechty, all of Berne and Rev. Robert Liechty.
