Parents: Greenberry Shaw, Nancy Perry (maiden name, Wicker).

Shepherd Shaw was born in Stokes, North Carolina to Greenberry Shaw (1791 - 1830) and Nancy Perry (1794 - 1860).

Around 1840 he moved with his parents to Ohio. On Nov. 26, 1847 Shepherd married Mary Caro Wilson in Green County, Ohio.

In 1858 Shepherd became the first owner of lot 2 of the original twelve parcels of land at the founding of the town of Botkins, Ohio.

Shepherd fought in the Civil War. He was enlisted in Company H, Ohio 20th Infantry Regiment on 27 Apr 1861 and mustered out on 18 Aug 1861 at Columbus, OH. On July 22, 1864 he was captured in Atlanta, Georgia and sent to the notorious Andersonville prison. The conditions at the prison were horrifying - it was just an open field surrounded by high timber walls. Sanitation was non-existent. Many, many people died terrible deaths there. Fortunately, Shepherd survived and was released on April 28, 1865 in Jacksonville Florida into the care of one of his brothers who was an ally of the Confederates. Shepherd was obviously a Union soldier. They must have had fascinating conversations.

Shepherd returned to Ohio for several years but sometime between 1870 and 1880 he had moved his family to Washington Township, Taylor County, Iowa. According to the 1880 Census, he owned 40 acres there and was a farmer.

According to Taylor County, Iowa Plat maps, the Shaw property abutted the railroad tracks. Perhaps this is what led the sons for the next two generations to become rail road men.

Shepherd died from Pneumonia at age 73, 8 months, and 29 days on Dec. 17, 1898 in Gravity, Iowa. He was proceeded in death by two sons, Adam and Greenberry ("George"), and his parents.
