Nettie Steel was born in Texas in 1881 as the daughter of George Washington Steel and Priscilla "Nettie" Taylor. She is never shown on a census record with her parents as she was born after the 1880 census and was married before the 1900 census.

However, on the 1900 census her father G.W. Steel and brothers, Henry, James U, John Franklin, and Samuel(not certain if he is a Steel or Selman by birth as two of Nettie's brothers took the Selman surname and were raised by she and her husband), and the grandmother Marian "Mary" Steel are in the Henry Smith Selman household. Her mother (Parscilla "Nettie" Taylor Steel) had died in 1892 even though the father is shown as married and it is known that there was a son G.W. Steel born in 1892 that is not show to be in the household at the date of the census, either. That son's, G.W. Steel, Jr., death certificate does list Nettie Taylor as his mother, Parscilla went by Nettie so Parscilla Nettie Taylor Steel was his mother, and G.W. Steel was his father. Nettie Steele Selman, also, had an older sister, Mariam, found on the 1880 census with her parents, but not traced past that date.

Nattie's husband, Henry Smith Selman, died in 1949 and is buried in Monahans, TX. The cemetery where Nettie is buried was renamed about 1981 as it was Roselawn Cemetery when Nettie was buried there in 1970. It should be noted that Nettie's brother Henry Steel is also buried in the same cemetery tha she is.
