Benjamin F. Ellis of Fairfax, Va., Laid to Rest in Augusta May 27
Benjamin F. Ellis, 87, a former Augusta business man, died May 24 in the Western State hospital, Staunton, Va. Mr. Ellis at one time owned a grocery store here, and for several years clerked in the King department store and the Crain Clothing store for men. He left Augusta in 1936 to make his home with his children in Virginia.
Final rites for Mr. Ellis were held May 27 in the Cookson Funeral Home. The Rev. K. K. Cunningham officiated and Miss Ella Pendleton presided at the organ. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bud Cain, Oren Dennis, Glenn and Wayne Robison, Q. B. Bilderback, and Glen Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Fred W. Beard, F. W. Venable, Edson King, Rollo Robbins, Ed Yates and Sam Gordon.
1870-Benjamin Franklin Ellis--1958
Benjamin Franklin Ellis was one of nine children born to Sarah Ellen Crain and Robert Ellis. He was born in Schuyler county, Illinois, August 15, 1870.
On November 18, 1900, he was united in marriage to Cora Farlow who passed away Sept. 16, 1924. To this union was born three children, Rachel, Robert and Helen who survive him along with seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was one of the pioneer families of the Huntsville neighborhood--his grandfather, Rev. William Crain being one of the early Methodist minister of Schuyler county.
After the death of his beloved companion he remained in Augusta until 1936 when he went to Virginia to make his home with his children. Of a gentle and kindly disposition he was ever eager to lend a hand to those who needed his help. His was a life of love and devotion to his family--no task too small and none ever too large for those he loved. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and many of their younger years were spent in companionship with him.
After a period of two years of failing health he passed away in Western State hospital, Staunton, Virginia where he was taken in early March of this year. Before going to the hospital, he was cared for by his loving and devoted daughter, Helen.
Of his immediate family he is survived by a son, Robert Ellis of California; two daughters, Mrs. Rachel Mead of Fairfax and Mrs. Helen Guervitz of Arlington, Va.; three sisters and a brother--Mrs. Olivia Hedrick of Quincy; Mrs. Dove Hall of Colinga, Calif.; and Mrs. Grace Evans, Sedalia, Mo.; and Homer Ellis of Rushville.
