Iris was born in Bushton, Coles County, Ill., to the late Clem and Jessie Coartney, the 13th of 15 children. After her mother's death in 1931, she was raised in the Baptist orphanage in Carmine, Illinois. She served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1953 until 1959 and met her husband-to-be in Germany. She married Robert E. Bell on July 3, 1960, in Tacoma, Wash., and served faithfully as a loving wife and homemaker until Robert's passing in 1984.
After Robert's death, she worked at Command Aire in McGregor until her retirement in 1994. Iris enjoyed her work and the many friends she met at work. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren, both in Austin and Waco. She loved watching sports and followed every move of the Baylor Lady Bears, both as a fan and a season ticket holder.
She is survived by son, Rodney W. Bell and wife, Bobbette, of Salado, Texas; daughters, Patricia L. David and husband, Dean, of Austin, and Donna K. Glass and husband, Felix, of Waco; grandchildren: Kendall Bell, Courtney David, Ryan David, Regan David, Mallory Glass, Morgan Glass, and McKenna Glass; brothers, Willis "Bill" Coartney, of Alpine, Cali., and Donald Coartney, of Prescott, Ariz.; sisters, Maridean Barton, of Coal City, Ill., and Betty Sanders, of Paw Paw, Michigan; other relatives and many friends.
