Most of the information is from Helen Anderson Humphries. Ranee Elizabeth Harder Hannah and Gail Lanier Hannah added to the story.
Sophus Waldimar Harder was born 8 January 1849 in Randers,Aarhus,Denmark. His parents were Nicolai Henneber Harder and Marie Kristine Feller Harder. He had three brothers- Hans Rudolph, Elimar Cathincus, and Broder Pauli, and one sister Kristine Catrina. His father was a farmer at Tammestrup,Randers County,Denmark. They were members of the Lutheran Church.
He was the only member of his family to join.Shortly after he married Alma Caroline Christine Hylling, they were converted to the Mormon Church by missionaries. He was the only member of his family to convert, and his family disowned him. He was baptized 5 June 1877 by Chris Christensen.Together they came to the United States on the "Wyoming" in 1879. He won $400.00 dollars in a lottery to pay for the ship tickets. From the place of landing, he and Alma C. went to Utah by Union Pacific train. He thought one of his brothers came to this country, but he never found out where he was.
From Salt Lake City they went to Nephi,Utah. He helped build the rail line between Salt Lake City and Los Angelos, California. At some point, they moved to Oasis,Millard County,Utah. From here, he worked in the open pit mines at Osela, near Ely,Nevada. He also worked for the railroad at Cline, which was a section located between Lynndyl and Delta. They lived in a section house. While working on the railroad he injured his back and was in the St.Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City for quite a long time. At one time,Al Martin believed he was born here, however he was born at Oasis at the home of Mary, his mother. He was taken from his mother as soon as he was weaned and taken to Cline. See Mary Erickson Harder bio
He and Alma Caroline had no children.Alma C.had a great desire for a son. At the time the Mormom church allowed plural marriages, so he took a second wife, Mary Erickson.Ranee said she had a leg and arm deformity, but unsure what it was. To this marriage four daughters and a son were born, Electa Maria( Anderson),Alma Martin(1887), Flora Christine(Leavitt), Sophia Wilhelmine(Robinson) (Swain), and Lillian Carline(1893).Lily lived only five months.By prior arrangement, at least with Sophus, Alma C. took Alma Martin as her son.The orginal arrangement was that she would get two children, but really only wanted sons. She did take Flora at some point- I think to use as servant. It was not until Al was fourteen did he learn of his birth mother and sisters: some of his friends told him .See Mary Erickson bio.In 1890, the church under pressure from the U.S. goverment disallowed pural marriages.
While in Oasis, Sophus took a homestead. There is a lot of alkali in the soil and farming was not going well.In 1894, he and Alma C. and young Alma Martin moved to Leamington, Millard County,Utah. Alma C. recieved a four hundred dollar inheritance from her father's estate. They bought a log house in which they lived and operate a store.Sophus was to work in the smelter(silver and lead) The smelter closed after eleven months. He was appointed postmaster.(Smelter and postmaster info from Ranee The store was still standing in the 1980's although it had additions and stucco covering the logs.Ranee)After his back injury he was able to do little work. One job he had was keeping the straw back when they were trashing grain.(Helen)
He and Pete Nelson liked to get together and sing. It is said that neither could carry a tune very well, but they had such a good time that an audience would always gather to hear them.
Sophus had crippling arthris and was bedridden for sixteen years. When Al Martin was eleven, his father took to his bed.A few years later, Flora, came to live in the house and help take care of her father. If Alma C. actions were consistent- Flora was treated as a servant- not daughter. He died 24 September 1913 at the age of 64.He is buried in the Leamington Cemetery with his two wives.I believe the story goes, since Alma C. died before Mary both wives are buried beside him.Mary's plot was orginally next to Lily Harder. This was the wish of his children.Gail
