Miss Marion Metcalf died on Monday, October 20th at the home of her brother, Dr. Henry M. Metcalf, on 16th street, Elyria, Ohio. Her health has been failing for about a year, but the immediate case of death was pneumonia. The funeral services were conducted by Dr. J. A. Richards of Oberlin and were held privately this afternoon. Burial was at Ridge Lawn Cemetery, Elyria. The services were attended by the members of the family only, including nine of her eleven surviving brothers and sisters.
Marion Metcalf was born in Elyria, Ohio, May 1, 1859, the oldest daughter of Isaac Stevens Metcalf and Antoinette Brigham Putnam Metcalf. She was graduated from the Elyria High School and from Wellesley College. She taught in the Elyria High School and taught the sciences at Wellesley College. She taught Bible at Hampton Institute of Hampton, Va.
Miss Metcalf returned to her home in Elyria to care for her motherless younger brothers. During the following years in Elyria she found time to teach in the Elyria High school for a year and to serve, for a term on the Board of Education. In 1904 she moved to Oberlin where she made her home for the remainder of her life. In Oberlin, when her family duties lightened, she became Church Visitor for the First Congregational Church, and later the United Church, resigning from the latter position early in this year. She also served for many years as reader for Professor Hutchins and Dean Graham in their College Bible classes.
Miss Metcalf is survived by the following brothers and sisters; General W. S. Metcalf of Lawrence, Kas.; Mrs. A. S. Root, New York City; Rev. J. M. P. Metcalf, Washington, D. C.; Rev. H. P. Metcalf, Madison, Ohio; Dr. H. M. Metcalf, Elyria, Ohio; Miss A. B. P. Metcalf, Wellesley, Mass.; J. M. Metcalf and E. W Metcalf, Webster Grover, Mo.; I. S. Metcalf, Lakewood, Ohio; K. D. Metcalf, White Plains, N. Y.; and T. N. Metcalf, Ames, Iowa.
