Memorial Service Set For Former Physician

A memorial service for Dr. Henry Martyn Metcalf will be held at the First Congregational church of Elyria Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Dr. Metcalf, son of Issac Stevens and Antoinette Putnam Metcalf, was born in Elyria on Sept. 11, 1871 at the home on West Ave., at Sixth St. He died July 19, 1955, at the home of his son William Sherwood Metcalf in Albion, N Y., where he had arrived only a few days earlier to make an extended visit.

Former School Teacher

Harry Metcalf (as he was generally known) was graduated from Elyria High School in 1886 and from Oberlin College in 1891.

He spent some time with and older brother in Lawrence, Kan. In 1899 he took Y.M.C.A. training, then taught schools in Montecello and in Brownville, Me. In 1901 he taught in Elyria High School.

In 1902 he entered Pennsylvania Medical School where he was graduated in 1906. The same year he married Mary L. Timbs of Wakeman and Elyria and stetted in Elyria to practice medicine. He was a member of the Ohio State Medical Association.

He was an active member of First Congregational church which he joined in 1885. He held several offices and for many years sang in the quartet or the choir.

He served as Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the U. S. Army station at Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, from July, 1917, to March, 1918, and at Camp Upton, Long Island, March, 1918, to September, 1919.

At the close of the war he moved to Wakeman where he practiced medicine until 1929 when he returned to Elyria. In 1937 he went to Hendrysburg to a successful country practice.

He leaves his wife, Mary T. Metcalf; two sons, Richard P. Metcalf of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and William Sherwood Metcalf of Albion, N. Y.; a sister, Antoinette B. P. Metcalf of Wellesley., Mass.; four brothers, Eliab W. Metcalf of Webster Groves, Mo.; Issac Stevens Metcalf of Charleston, S. C., Keyes DeWitt Metcalf of Cambridge, Mass., Issac Stevens Metcalf of Chicago, and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Metcalf and the sons will be win the Narthex of the First Congregational Church to meet friends from 1:45 to 2:30 before the service Saturday afternoon.
