Howard T. Byer, 93, of Dixon, passed on to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Pinecrest Manor, Mount Morris.
Howard was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Egeland, N.D., the son of Isaac and Cleo (Bolyard) Byer. At 2 years of age, he and his family moved to Bemidji, Minn., where he graduated from high school. He then attended college in McPherson, Kan.
On Dec. 12, 1941, Howard was united in marriage to June Miller of Franklin Grove, where they lived before moving in 1952 to Dixon.
Howard was employed by Raynor Manufacturing Co. for 33 years, as an office and credit manager before retiring in 1978.
Howard was a member of Church of the Brethren since he was 11 years old. He served as church deacon, Sunday school teacher, and on various boards. He did volunteer work for Pinecrest Manor, Camp Emmaus, Habitat for Humanity, and various disaster relief services.
Survivors include his wife June, of Dixon; two daughters, Anita (Dan) Dunphy and Carolyn (Floyd) Thomas, both of Dixon; two brothers, Burnell Byer of Helena, Mont., and John Byer of Bemidji, Minn., four sisters, Wanda Johnson and Millie Adams, both of The Villages, Fla., Ida (Neil) Eller of Roanoke, Va., and Bernice Reff of Missoula, Mont.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brad; one brother, Willis; and one sister, Addie Posz.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dixon Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Stan Rodebaugh, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Arrangements were completed by Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon.
Memorials have been established to Dixon Church of the Brethren, Pinecrest Manor Good Samaritan Fund, Ogle County Hospice.
