Bernice was the seventh of nine children born to Isaac & Cleo Byer. Raised on the family farm in Guthrie Twp, Minnesota, and attended country school through 9th grade.
In 1948 she married John (Jack) Reff and they were married for 60 years until Jack's death in 2008. They had three daughters, Wanda, Jeanne, Stephanie, and son, Kevin.
