As told by my father Nowlin Decatur Kartchner (1902). My father had many talent and his services were in big demand in many localities. He said he was jack of all trades and master of none. But as I remember him when a neighbor needed something done my father usually got the job done.
His two main trades were blacksmith and brick mason. From these two trades he managed to keep groceries on hand and to clothe his family.
Nowlin Decture II (1902) was born in a little isolated town in Old Mexico, Colonia Diaz.
My folks, Nowlin Decatur (1862) and Ellen Bodella left there in 1912 during the Mexican Revolution. The Mexicans sent word ahead for the men to stack their guns at the store so they could take them on arrival. This didn't agree with the people and in four hours they were on their way for the United States with guns in our wagons. I suppose the Mexicans were satisfied to take the homes instead of the guns. At least they didn't follow to take our guns. They carried off everything that was loose and set fire to the rest of it.
Leaving Mexico, the family stopped for a brief time in the Gila Valley and Snowflake, Arizona before settling on a homestead in Linden, Arizona.
