Following the death of John's mother in 1902, he was adopted by his mother's sister, Maria Bryan Degge Pike and her husband, Walter Raleigh Pike and his surname changed from Jones to Pike. He became brother to Mildred Degge Pike, the daughter of Maria and Walter, born in 1895.
In the 1900 Federal Census John is shown as one year old and his birth year as 1899; however, the Social Security Death Index shows his year of birth as 1902 as does the inscription on his tombstone.
On September 9, 1920, at the age of 25, he married Florence M. Bayne and together they had one child, Margaret Jean "Peggy" Pike.
John worked as a printer at the local Norfolk newspaper.
He died in 1968 at the age of 66 and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia next to his wife, Florence Bayne Pike.
