Walter Raleigh Pike, born in 1870, was the only child born to Horace Pike of Augusta, Maine (some records show Horace's middle initial as "P" and others as "L") and Patsy "Mattie" Bray Pike born in North Carolina.
In 1891, at the age of 20, he married Maria Bryan Degge and together they had two daughters, Ruth Virginia Pike who died in 1894 at the age of 14 months, and Mildred Degge Pike born in 1895.
Their son, John Clark Pike, was adopted in 1902. John was the son of Maria's sister, Mary Ella Degge Jones (who died in 1902) and her husband William Jones.
Walter worked as a printer at the local Norfolk newspaper.
He died in 1940 at the age of 70 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia next to his wife, Maria Bryan Degge Pike.
