SYRACUSE--Samuel J. Thurgood, 74, well-known farmer and road supervisor of Syracuse, Davis county, died at three-fifteen a. m. today in an Ogden hospital, following a month's illness.

Mr. Thurgood was born in Bountiful, May 14, 1868, a son of Thomas and Sarah Banks Thurgood, early Davis county pioneers.

He moved to Syracuse 54 years ago, and has made his home there since. He had been road supervisor for that district for the past 16 years. He was a member of the LDS church and the Syracuse ward high priest group of the North Davis stake quorum. He was a ward teacher and for many years assisted in obtaining cars for funerals held in the ward.

He was married Nov. 27, 1888, in the Logan LDS temple, to Martha Tolman.

Survivors, besides his widow, include seven sons and daughters, Judson S. Thurgood, Dell (Delbert) Thurgood, Mrs. Hyrum Bennett (Ella), Mrs. Willis Singleton (Martha Jane) and Mrs. Ray Dahl (Bessie), all of West Point; Loran Thurgood and Miss LaVaun Thurgood of Syracuse; 19 grandchildren, and brothers and sisters as follows: Thomas J. Thurgood and Mrs. Joseph Easthope, both of Syracuse, Mrs. Elizabeth Parkin of Salt Lake City, and George B. Thurgood of Clearfield.

Services will be conducted Wednesday at two p. m. in the Syracuse LDS ward chapel by Bishop J. Henry Rampton, with burial following in the Syracuse cemetery
