HATTERAS TRAGEDY DECLARED RESULT OF FAST DRIVING
Jack Austin Dead and Six Others Injured Sunday Evening at Night Spot

The tragic motor mishap which resulted in the death of John Simon Austin of Hatteras and injured six other people Sunday evening is attributed to the high speed of a car driven by Deryl Quidley, 21 of Hatteras. Quidley, who was bound northward drove a 1953 4-door Chevrolet which had been moving at an estimated speed of nearly 100 miles per hour. Some 800 yards down the road, as indicated by skid marks, it appeared he attempted to slow, probably upon viewing the rear end of Austin's car protruding into the highway. Quidley lost control of his car, it traveled 432 feet and ran into the dirt near Tandy's place, where it ran another 280 feet and struck into Austin's 1951 2-door Ford, bowling it over, and totally wrecking both cars, the Chevrolet burning up. Austin was killed. Allen McAbee, 15, sustained a fractured hip. Ellis Willis 21, who was also in the Austin car, suffered a fractured knee and spine. Quidley suffered severe injuries. Myron Nelson (Clam)Stowe, who accompanied him, suffered a fracture of the right hip, which had seriously been injured before. Darrell Merrill, 20, suffered from multiple face lacerations, shock and loss of blood. George Haywood Goode, suffered a fractured right knee and other injuries. Tommy Goode, 13, got out lightest with mere bruises. Coast Guard helicopters were notified and took the injured men to hospitals in Elizabeth City and Norfolk. The funeral of J. S. Austin was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Hatteras Methodist church of which he was a member, by the pastor. Rev. Ray Sparrow. Burial was in Austin cemetery. He was the son of Mrs. Sallie Ann Austin of Hatteras and the late James W. Austin. He was a lifelong resident of Hatteras. His wife was the late Iola Belle Robinson, who died 26 years ago. He is survived by three sons, Hubert of Norfolk, Charles R. of Woodberry, N. J., Archie E. of Morehead City; three daughters, Mrs. Rosemond Meekins of Camden, N. J., Mrs. Leola Rollinson, Buxton, and Mrs. Belle O'Neal of Norfolk. By one brother, James Austin of Hatteras and a sister Mrs. Woodard Peele of Wanchese and 14 grandchildren.
