Birth: 2nd of ten known children in Overton county, Tennessee, with middle name being his maternal grandmother's maiden name who married son of a Revolutionary war veteran.

John's uncle James Crittenden Webb and father, Elijah Clawson Webb, came to what now is Duenweg, Jasper county, Missouri from Overton county, Tennessee, in 1855, first named Harmony Grove with the family cemetery still carrying that name. John, reportedly followed with his family a year later settling north on about 200 acres, acquiring an additional 120 acres, where now Webb City is located.

Near the outbreak of war in 1861, he was owner of thirteen slaves and served with Missouri Governor Jackson's militia for six months, soon after he went south with son staying behind to manage his holdings, ~ ~ returning to his log cabin and to farm his land following the war.

Reportedly, he discovered white lead on his farm in June 1873 with leasing for systematic mining yeilding millions of dollars starting in 1877 after he gave up fighting water and with his inexperience of mining.

Platted Webb City, Jasper county, Missouri 15 December 1875 which was incorporated 8 December 1876 of which younger brother Benjamin C Webb became its first mayor, who married a 1st cousin, Elizabeth Jane Webb.

Judge Malcolm Graeme McGregor has on page 72 a bit about John in his 1901 publishd "The biographical record of Jasper County, Missouri".

John was most benevolent, furnishing school sites and construction of a church. John reportedly built 1st brick house, 1st brick business building, 1st hotel and with 1st son opened the 1st bank which his son ran effectively, according to articles by Alice W Spradley of Dallas, Texas, September 2001 and Webb City Chamber of Commerce in 2002.
