St. George, UT - Harriet Anna Anderson Leavitt returned home 13 July 2010 surrounded by her loving family. Harriet was born 15 May 1921 at Anderson Ranch, Washington County, Utah. Her parents were Albert and Deslie Lowe Anderson. She graduated from Parowan High School and Dixie College. On 14 June 1941, she married Lavoid Leavitt in Reno, Nevada. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. She and her husband raised a family and worked for forty years in Hawthorne, Nevada. She had a distinguished career as a grade school teacher, and she also inaugurated the special education programs in the Mineral County School District. Harriet knew many people in Nevada state government, and often took her second grade classes to Carson City to meet the Governor and other political notables of the day. She was well known for her gift of adapting situations to the individual needs of her students. As a result, she was Mineral County Teacher of the Year, and also first runner-up for Nevada Teacher of the Year. Harriet was a talented painter, and her works of art are cherished heirlooms of her children. In addition, she was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding positions in many of its auxiliaries. This included chorister, Sunday School teacher, and a counselor in the Washington Stake Relief Society. She and Lavoid served a mission in New Mexico. Harriet is well known for her compassion and loving heart, and has made many friends over the years. But her most ardent admirers are her family. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lavoid; her children: Deslie (Roger) Handy, Louise (Chris) Engstrom, and Dale (Celeste) Leavitt; her 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Jim (Jennifer) Leavitt, and granddaughter, Susan Engstrom. Harriet leaves behind a legacy and testimony of Jesus Christ. Her example and her life will always be cherished by her family and many friends. May you rest in peace, Mother. We will always love you. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Mortuary, prior to services. Internment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
