Son of John Wiseman Hestand and Sarah Ann (Neeley) Hestand. Jim married Stella McFarland in 1897. He was an ordained Baptist minister and missionary. Many years, during the time he was raising his family, he was a farmer and for a brief period of time worked for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) railroad company in Parsons, Kansas.
