After his military service James III met and later married Berthenia OWENS Crawford on 22 Aug 1815 in Maury Co, TN. This is where young Andrew Jackson Crawford would grow up with his many siblings including:

3. Elizabeth Jane CRAWFORD Gray b.1822
- married Hubbard S. Gray

7. John Casey Crawford b.1838
Of age in Tennessee, A.J. Crawford married Martha Ellen Thomas OLIVER Crawford. Her father Pvt. Thruston W. Oliver was also a veteran of the War of 1812. The young couple is first documented together in the 1850 US Census with daughter Rebecca, and living alongside A.J.'s father, mother, and siblings in Henderson Co, TN where his wife's Oliver family had first settled in the mid-1830's migrating west from Virginia.
Soon after, the larger Crawford family migrated south through Arkansas into Texas which had recently gained statehood in 1845. A.J., his older brother William, and their father James Lesley Crawford III purchased land just east of the new community of San Saba, TX (founded 1852) on the San Saba River at Brown's Branch in the year 1855. They would start a successful, multi-generational ranching operation there known as the Crawford Cattle Ranch. San Saba would later become a major stop and reliable watering hole (Colorado and San Saba Rivers) on the western branch of the Old Chisholm Trail bringing cattle out of the Hill Country and Central Texas up through Red River Station and onto the lots and rails at Abilene, KS. Soon after, A.J. Crawford was drafted into service during the American Civil War, 1861-1865 serving as a Private in the Texas Cavalry, 2nd Regiment, Arizona Brigade.
Thankfully A.J. returned home to his wife and family in San Saba County, TX where he and Ellen would raise a large family and enjoy the hard work of the Texas Cattle business. In their later years, A.J. and Ellen Crawford donated five acres of their land to local community leaders for the grounds of Harris Cemetery, today designated a Historic Texas Cemetery. He lived a big full life of 85+ years.
